India is the biggest democracy in the world - at least when looking at it's population. As a country it is also food for thought for researchers because it does not fit into established categories of democratization processes. But for all that India plays a comparatively small role in political science. The same goes for the German party political foundations. These unique players can be found for instance in the field of democracy promotion. On the example of India the spectrum of democracy promotion of these foundations is being looked at. It expounds the problems of how "western" players as these foundations act in a country like India, if they reflect that democracy beyond the West might be structured and function differently than they think it should, and which limits there actually are to their way of promoting democracy.
