Introduction: The use of smooth surface sealants for reduction of demineralization while orthodontic treatment is a promising method in caries prophylaxis. The aim of the present in-vitro study was to investigate the resistance to discoloration of these materials aside of the caries preventive use. Materials and Methods: 180 untreated extracted human permanent anterior teeth were used for this examination. Specimens were randomly devided into these six groups: control group (no treatment), Pro Seal, Light Bond, Clearfil Protect Bond, Ortho Solo, Protecto CaF2 Nano. The application of the sealants was performed according to manufacturer’s instructions for use. To examine the resistance to discoloration six teeth of every group were immersed in the following five drinks: distilled water, black tea, red wine, coffee, Coca-Cola. The first color determination with the spectrophotometer VITA Easyshade Advance was made for identifying the basic color value. Afterwards the teeth were immersed in the different drinks for overall 576 hours. This simulates the average period of wear of fixed orthodontic appliances, which is nearly 24 months. Color determination was performed after 24, 144, 288 and at the end of the 576 hours. Colors were measured according to the CIE L*,a*,b*- color scale (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage) and were interpreted with Excel 2007 and “R”. To determine the color difference following formula was used for estimating the delta E: ∆E = [(∆L*)²+(∆a*)²+(∆b*)²]0,5. With the help of a linear regression model the influence of the material, the drink and the immersion time could be examined. Tukey test was performed to illustrate the differences between the sealants. Results: The material, the drink and the immersion time have a significant influence to delta E. Pro Seal and Protecto CaF2 nano showed no significant difference to the untreated control group. There were higher discolorations on the teeth coated with the other products. Most discoloration was examined for teeth stored in red wine. Conclusion: As a matter of principle, patients should be advised to avoid highly colored foods such as red wine, coffee and Coca-Cola in order to prevent discoloration of smooth surface sealers during fixed orthodontic therapy.
