The severity of nerve injury after a needle-nerve-perforation was not related to the needle type or tip configuration. Regardless of the needle tip configuration applied for nerve perforation pencil-point and Tuohy needle tips result in a comparable magnitude of nerve injury. According to our histological findings, posttraumatic inflammation rather than structural damage of nerve tissue is the most considerable sign of nerve injury after needle-nerve perforation. According to the present data neither pencil-point nor Tuohy-tip configurated cannula should be considered less harmful in peripheral regional anaesthesia.
