Breast cancer and osteoporosis are two important diseases. Both are influenced by estrogens. For breast cancer estrogens seem to be a risk factor, in contrast to osteoporosis. Here estrogens seem to be protective. In this study we analyse if it´s possible to show this inverse correlation between these two diseases by measuring bone mineral density with DXA and QUS. Therefore we chose pre- and postmenopausal women with primary breast cancer and healthy controls. We measured bone mineral density at lumbar spine and total hip and ultrasound parameters at the os calcaneus with QUS. After matched pair analysis and odds ratio calculation we came to the results, that patients with primary breast cancer do have higher BMD measured with DXA and QUS. Women with higher BMD measured by DXA and QUS seem to have a higher risk for breast cancer.
