Untreated reading and spelling disabilities often persist over the course of an entire life span and are associated with negative impacts on academic, socio-emotional and motivational factors. Adequate support measures should therefore also benefit from addressing further factors relevant to learning and achievement contexts aside from influencing written language competence. Motivational factors can, for instance, increase participation engagement as well as impact short-term and long-term competency improvement. The first study incorporated in this thesis gives an overview of the acquisition of motivational factors in evaluation studies of evidence-based dyslexia training and reveals deficient interest. Based on this deficit, the development of a new type of spelling training is introduced. The Rechtschreibtraining mit Dino (spelling training with Dino) stands out from established training programs by considering motivational factors, its evidence-based development foundation as well as the intention to be an efficient, economical and easily established program. The latter is implemented through a standardized training conduction in the scope of a university seminar, which contributes to the education of students and furthermore establishes professional support for people effected by dyslexia that is free of charge. The paper at hand presents the fundamentals and goal criteria of the development, as well as anticipated effect mechanisms of the support program, and concludes by introducing two evaluation studies. A pilot study examines whether the training concept is feasible in the intended scope. Its positive result serves as the basis for the subsequent study, which investigates the impact of the training on reading and spelling competence and individual motivational factors in a randomized controlled study and proves the students’ satisfaction with the structure of the seminar. In the overall discussion of this thesis, the training concept’s target achievement is assessed and is classified with regard to its significance for the German support system of reading and spelling deficiencies. Limitations along with related future research issues are also presented. Collectively, the thesis at hand can clearly demonstrate the value added by Rechtschreibtraining mit Dino for tutoring children with reading and spelling disabilities.
