In a retrospective study the long term results of intramedullary nailing of forearm fractures in children were analysed. For this purpose, 90 patients, which experienced diaphyseale forearm fractures as infants, were interviewed. These patients have been treated from 2000 to 2007 at the University Hospital Marburg by intramedullary nailing. They were interviewed by phone. The current condition of the patients was evaluated using the DASH Score and the Mayo Wrist Score. In addition to these established evaluation scores the newly developed Marburger Erhebungsbogen (Marburg evaluation form) was used to collect further information about the patient's condition. The interviews were done on average 12.4 years after surgery. In our study population we evaluated an average DASH score of 0.4 (standard deviation: 1.45), for sport/performing arts 0.9 (standard deviation: 5.68) and for the work module 0.3 (standard deviation: 7.39). 77 % of our patients achieved a DASH Score of 0. The average Mayo Wrist Score was 97.64 (standard deviation: 7.39), 82% of the study population achieved a score of 100. A correlation between the DASH Score and the Mayo Wrist Score was found only in a few patients. The DASH Scores and Mayo Wrist Scores demonstrated better point values for our study population than in most other studies reported. Little correlation was found between the DASH Score, Mayo Wrist Scores and the Marburger Erhebungsbogen. All in all, this study demonstrates favorable long-term results achieved by intramedullary nailing for forearm fractures in children.
