Endodontics is an important discipline of conservative dentistry. The conscien-tious mechanical treatment, the rinsing of the root canal system and the root canal filling play a decisive role for the survival period of the tooth. In case of endodontic failure due to non-compliance with these measures, the retreatment of the root filling is the treatment of choice. The aim is to remove the root canal filling as completely as possible. Failures in the retreatment are often due to remaining microorganisms in dentin tubules or lateral canals. However, residual root filling material from bulges, dentinal tubules, and lateral canals cannot be removed by conventional means with mechanic desobturation instruments alone. Here, activated instruments can be an additional option. The aim was to find out whether the removal of root canal fillings with or without solvents leads to differences in the injection of obturation material into the simu-lated lateral canals.
