This doctoral thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, the relationship between political leaders’ socioeconomic characteristics and states´ fiscal and economic performances is empirically analyzed. In the second part, the public’s attitudes toward several topics in fiscal policy are evaluated utilizing data from a representative survey of the German population.
