The central aspect of this PhD-Thesis is the development of methods for shaping and characterization of femtosecond UV-pulses and their application to time resolved spectroscopy. The construction of a pulse shaper, capable of direct modulation of femtosecond UV-pulses, is an ideal source for spectroscopy and coherent control. In order to support the application of shaped UV-pulses, three sensitive UV characterization techniques in the nJ regime were developed. Especially the development of a reference free shaper assisted characterization method for full phase retrieval of nJ pulses should be mentioned here. A successful application of femtosecond UV-pulses in time resolved spectroscopy was demonstrated in Coumarin and its derivative Umbelliferone (7-Hydroxy-Coumarin). Based on global analysis concepts a first model of the relaxation dynamics of these systems could be developed. The concepts of pulse shaping and time resolved spectroscopy are brought together in measurements on the double excited state intramolecular proton transfer system (2,2’-bipyridyl)-3,3’-diol or BP(OH)2. Based on these results arguments in favor of a pure sequential mechanism of this reaction could be developed.
