Cation exchangers were synthesized via coating silica materials with polybutadienemaleic anhydride. Variation of important synthetic parameters yielded in polymers with a low molecular weight and an alternating structure. The cation exchangers were able to separate alkaline and earth alkaline metalions efficiently in appropriate analysis times. Application of the retention model showed retention mechanism using only ion exchange. New cation exchangers were synthesized via graft polymerization of styrene derivatives to polystyrene-divinylbenzene. Synthesis were developed to achieve styrene derivatives with a structure similar to PBDMA. Different carboxylic acids were used in the graft polymerization: Vinylbenzenephosphonic acid, vinylbenzoic acid, vinylphenylacetic acid, vinylphenylsuccinic acid and vinylphthalic acid. Cation exchangers with different capacity ranges were obtained. Ion exchangers with dicarboxylic acid functionality were able to separate alkaline and earth alkaline metalions successfully. Due to the determined pKa-values and appliance of the retention model statements about selectivities in order to the exchange structure were made.
