Headand neck carcinoma ist an important public health problem world wide. The second most frequent histologic type of carcinoma of the head and neck ist the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oropharynx. Often patients are diagnosed in advanced stage and that means a poor prognosis. Prognistic information is essential for judgement and optimal treatment for patients with this kind of carcinoma. Using immunohistochemical technique we studied the signigicance of proliferation activity of SCC of the oropharynx of 75 patiens using the monoclonal antibody Ki-S11 and Ki-S2 and the metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9).The results showed a significant positive correlation between the proliferation activity of the monoclonal antibodies. Although a correlation between the proliferation activity and the 5-year-survival rate could be shown, but these results hat no statistically significance. Correlations between the 5-year-survival an the intensity of the with MMP-9 stained carcinoma cells could although not be found. In conclusion the monoclonal antibodies Ki-S11 and Ki-S2 and the MMP-9 is not unlimitid useable for prognostic statement for SCC of the oropharynx.
