The german architect and author Alfred Gellhorn (1885-1972) belongs to the forgotten of the history of architecture. Formerly a much-respected representative of the “modern movement” of the Weimar Republic (1918/19-1933), he had to flee in 1933 as a victim of the fascist persecution because of his former Jewish faith. A period of unstability began, which was characterized by numerous removals in Europe and South America. As a result of these difficult circumstances the public took no notice of his entire work in the following decades. This doctoral thesis draws a picture of the most important stages of Alfred Gellhorns life and analyzes the work from 1920 to 1933 in detail, considering first of all the contemporary currents, the influencing control of the clients and the contradiction between artistically aims and actually realized work.
