Nowadays there is a great demand for special uses in ion chromatography and it is difficult to find a well suiting analytical column and eluent in commercial offers. Because of this, anion exchangers with different polymer bodies, spacers and functional groups were prepared and characterized. This leads to an extensive knowledge of the behaviour of various separation columns in combination with different eluents and by that to a unique pool of anion exchangers of whom it is possible to choose a column/eluent combination which fits for special analytical problems. Application for this was the trace determination of anionic impurities in high concentrated nitric acid, which is used for the manufacturing of microchips. Therefore two IC-systems were coupled via an external 6-port-valve an a concentrator column. In the first section retention times of analyte anions chloride, sulphate and phosphate are much shorter than for nitrate because of the high capacity anion exchanger in combination with a concentrated hydroxide eluent. The second system quantifies the analytes using commercial high performance anion exchanger.
