Studies in the past have shown that over 50% of the teachers as well as the students of the teaching profession present with dysphonia. An updated study was conducted to establish the present situation of dysphonia amongst students of the education department. Common phoniatric examination techniques as well as analytical ratings of voice quality were employed. The reliability of the results was determined by repeating the analytical ratings after one week. The study was conducted with 53 subject. 23 subjects reported subjective voice complaints such as hoarseness and dysesthesia. The complaints of 20 of those subjects were confirmed by means of objective examinations as well as by rating the quality of voice subjectively. In addition, stroboscopic examination techniques confirmed the result of the subjective voice rating. This study shows that 45% of the students of the teaching profession suffer from dysphonia. These results correspond with those of previous investigations. The importance of preventive examinations for voice hygiene is therefore evident. One recommendation may be to effect voice check-ups prior to entering the teaching profession.
