The aim of this investigation was to find a method of determining the optimum point of rotation of the hip joint by means of X-rays for use in cases where the individual anatomical position cannot be reconstructed. For this purpose, we examined X-rays which showed 214 anatomically correct and intact hip joints of 114 patients. In the X-rays, we measured the pelvic height as well as the vertical and horizontal distances between two different points of reference and the centre of the femural head and calculated their percentage relationship to the pelvic height. The points of reference chosen were on the one hand the point of intersection of two tangential lines placed laterally of and beneath the teardrop figure and on the other hand the point of intersection of KohlerŽs line and a tangential line layed on the upper rim of the foramen obturatum. The vertical distance for the first point of reference was named A and the horizontal distance B, the distances for the second point of reference being C and D, accordingly. The values found showed differences with regard to sex. The results found were as follows: Men: A: 6,60, B: 14,54, C: 7,77, D: 17,41 Women: A: 6,95, B: 13,71, C: 7,75, D: 15,34.
