Political awareness and action are strongly influenced by the categories of enemy and friend. Enemy images, i.e. strong negative prejudices, are to be distinguished from real enemies. The essential characteristics of pronounced enemy images include negative evaluation, dehumanisation, attribution of blame and zero-sum thinking. Individual, social and political factors can be involved in the formation of enemy images. Enemy images have important functions: They increase individual and collective self-esteem and they promote the escalation and violent resolution of conflicts. Central tasks in reducing enemy images are increasing empathy and cooperation. An important strategy could be to explain the psychological, social and material consequences of war.
