The novels Irmgard Keuns of the years 1930-1940 comprise victims of social and political repression. "Gilgi" and "Das kunstseidene Mädchen" are taking place during the economic crisis (1931 or respectively 1932). According to the transformation of the political system in Germany the figures experience financial misery. In "Nach Mitternacht" (1937) Keun writes about living in germany during the national socialism, whereas "Kind aller Länder" (1938) and "D-Zug dritter Klasse" (1938) describe the life in the exile, so the emphasis of these books is fascist repression. However, in all of her novels Irmgard Keun criticises patriarchy and the reactionary treatment of women.
