Summary:
Polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules based on CaCO3 and SiO2 cores coated
with the polyelectrolyte systems PAH/PSS and PDADMAC/PSS have been
analyzed. A series of measurement has been conducted to study the impact
of temperature, rotation speed during precipitation and concentration of the
stock solutions on the CaCO3 core diameter. Also the effect of annealing on
the empty capsules has been observed. As a result an impact of the heating
on the diameter was observed, but in a few cases swelling was detected
although shrinking was expected. Furthermore a strong dependency of the
CaCO3 particle size on the rotation speed during the particle precipitation
has been observed. The CaCO3 microspheres increased in size if the rotation
speed was decreased from 1200 rpm to 250 rpm while in general keeping their
monodisperse character. This could be used to obtain monodisperse particles
with tunable size that can be employed in a wide field of applications
like biotechnology, medicine or catalysis.
