Summary of the results: 1. Higher NYHA stadium and female gender had shown an equally negative influence on the distance walked during the 6 minute walk test on patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. 2. Healthy family members also showed a lesser walking distance during the 6 Minute walk test when they had been female or had a smaller shortening fraction. 3. The results of the 6 minute walk test were well comparable to the results of the exercise electrocardiography and to the score on our modified Borg-scale. 4. Improvement of walking distance occurred before the patient realised an improvement of his or her NYHA stadium.
