Verhaltensversuche mit fixiert fliegenden Wüstenheuschrecken zeigen, dass die Tiere in der Lage sind, sich mit Hilfe von polarisiertem Licht zu orientieren. Die dorsale Randregion ist der verantwortliche Augenregion, die zur Induziereung des Flugverhaltens führt. Die Pollichtinformation wird exklisiv von der dorsalen randregion über den anterioren optischen Trakt zum Zentralkomplex des Heuschreckengehirns weitergegeben.
