In this study, the long-term outcome of stroke in terms of quality of life four years after affection was analysed, as well as the direct and indirect long-term costs of stroke patients in Germany. Additionally, determinants of quality of life of stroke survivors and the frequency of neuropsychological disorders like depression, anxiety and dementia were identified. The study included 151 consecutive patients with stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA) that were diagnosed and treated in the Dept. of Neurology, Philipps-University Marburg. Follow-up exams four years after stroke/TIA were performed by a standardised questionnaire including the modified Rankin scale and Barthel Index to assess handicaps, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale to score depression and anxiety, and the EQ-5D to assess health-related Quality of Life. Costs were calculated by using a bottom-up approach including data which were obtained by interviews of the patients. Direct medical and non-medical costs, indirect costs and patients´ additional payments were calculated.
