The cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has been identified as a factor in the developement and progression of cancer, besides its many functions in the immune system. This thesis analysis the expression and function of MIF in human glioblastoma cells. MIF is upregulated and secreted in response to angiogenetic stimuli eg. hypoxia and glucose withdrawl in the tumour cell culture. Targeting MIF by antisense strategy and blockade by antibodies results in a decreased proliferation and in reintroduction of conatct inhibition in the glioblastoma cells.
