Die Aufmerksamkeit, die Germanium in den letzten Jahren aufgrund seiner guten optischen Eigenschaften auf sich gezogen hat, führte zu einer stetigen Verbesserung der erreichten Materialqualität. Die physikalischen Eigenschaften von Germanium führen dazu, dass es dabei in vielerlei Situationen ein überraschendes Verhalten zeigt, was sich von dem direkter Halbleiter unterscheidet. Diese Eigenschaften sind vornehmlich in der Form der Bandstruktur von Germanium begründet. Trotz seiner indirekten Bandlücke, besitzt es durch das lokale Leitungsbandminimum am Gamma-Punkt ausgeprägte Eigenschaften eines direkten Halbleiters. Die spektroskopische Untersuchung einer (GaIn)As Probe mit sehr starken THz Impulsen zeigte zu einem der ersten Male einen intraexzitonischen Autler-Townes Effekt. Durch eine Simulation auf Basis einer mikroskopischen Vielteilchentheorie konnte aus dieser Messung die genaue kohärente Dynamik der Polarisation bestimmt werden. Es zeigt sich, dass das Exzitonenensemble nach der Anregung nicht auf wenige Zustände beschränkt ist, sondern Zustände bis tief in das Kontinuum angeregt sind. Trotz der wesentlich kürzeren Dephasierungszeit in Germanium konnte auch hier diese Aufspaltung der Exzitonenresonanz beobachtet werden. Im Rahmen der Untersuchungen zum dynamischen Stark-Effekt ergab sich für Germanium eine um einen Faktor 2 größere Blauverschiebung im Vergleich zu den Literaturwerten für (GaIn)As. Dieser Unterschied konnte maßgeblich auf den Unterschied der T2-Zeiten zurückgeführt werden. Außerdem wurde der Effekt erstmals in Abhängigkeit von der Verstimmung des treibenden elektrischen Feldes für einen Energiebereich von einigen 100meV bestimmt. Bei quasi resonanter Anregung des direkten Bandüberganges wurde eine Überlagerung verschiedener Effekte beobachtet. Neben der normalen Blauverschiebung der Bandkante werden zu frühen Zeiten auch die Ausbildung eines Mollow-Triplets, Modulationen in den Kontinuumszuständen, sowie eine optischen Verstärkung ohne Ladungsträgerinversion beobachtet. Dabei zeigen sich die Mollow-Seitenbanden und die Modulation der Kontinuumszustände nur, wenn Anrege- und Abfrageimpuls kozirkular zueinander polarisiert sind. Bei gegensätzlich zirkularer Polarisation wird nur eine Verschiebung der Resonanz beobachtet. Für diesen Fall zeigt sich allerdings wie erwartet eine Spaltung der Leichtlochresonanz. Im inkohärenten Zeitregime führt die Streuung der Elektronen in die L-Täler dazu, dass die direkten optischen Übergänge maßgeblich nur noch die Dynamik des Lochsystems widerspiegeln. Die Streuzeit der Elektronen wurde temperaturabhängig vermessen und lag im bereich von wenigen hundert fs. Durch diese schnelle Streuung der Elektronen ist es möglich vergleichsweise einfach die Spinpolarisation der Lochzustände zu bestimmen. Für eine spinpolarisierte Lochverteilung ergab sich bei einer Temperatur von 7K eine Zerfallszeit von 2,5ps, welche sich bis 250K auf 1,1ps reduzierte. Im Anschluss daran wurde die Abkühlung heißer Landungsträgerverteilungen näher untersucht. Mithilfe theoretischer Rechnungen konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Lochverteilung selbst bei einer resonanten Anregung des direkten Bandüberganges eine Anfangstemperatur von über 1000K annimmt. Die Energie die zum Aufheizen des Lochsystems notwendig ist, kann nur aus dem elektronischen System geliefert werden. Dieses bekommt durch die Streuung in die L-Täler bei 293K eine Überschussenergie von 140meV pro Ladungsträger. Da das Aufheizen der Lochverteilung in den Experimenten nicht beobachtet werden kann, muss es einen effizienten Streumechanismus geben, der die beiden Systeme aneinander koppelt. In dem zeitlichen Verlauf der Ladungsträgertemperatur lässt sich ab 200K der Übergang von der durch optische Phononen dominierten Abkühlung hin zu einer Kühlung alleinig durch akkustische Phononen beobachten. Zuletzt wurde die Verstärkungsdynamik in verspannten Germaniumschichten betrachtet. Es zeigte sich, dass die angeregten Löcher in Germanium durch freie Ladungsträgerabsorption effektiv zu einer Erhöhung der Absorption führen. Dieses zeigte sich deutlich an der transienten Absorption einer p-dotierten Probe. In einer n-dotierten Probe konnte eine optische Verstärkung nachgewiesen werden, mit einer Lebenszeit um eine ns. Mit einer optischen Anregung zeigte die Probe eine Photolumineszenz, die unter geeigneten Bedingungen eine Linie ausbildete. Diese Linie konnte einer verstärkten spontanen Emission zugeordnet werden. Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass das Potential von Germanium für die Silizium Photonik noch immer nicht letztendlich beurteilt werden kann. Die Demonstration von optisch gepumpten Lasern auf diesem Material stimmt auf jeden Fall zuversichtlich, dass ein elektrisch betriebener Germaniumlaser in Greifweite ist.
