Jean-Baptiste Pierre Le Brun (1748–1813) was one of the most influential and important figures in art trade in the late 18th century. In a time of social and political upheaval, he worked in Paris as an art connoisseur, consultant and museum expert. His exhibitions and publications were groundbreaking and influenced the reception of Dutch and German painting in the 19th century. This thesis traces Le Brun’s work during the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era and provides insight into the international art trade at the time and the creation of the public museum in Paris.
