The organometallic chemistry of rare-earth metals has witnessed an enormous growth in the last 40 years. The hope for a more sustainable use of our limited resources lies, inter alia, in the catalytic potential of rare-earth metals. The rare-earth metals are 17 (group 3 elements and the lanthanides) little-known yet not so rarely occurring metals of the periodic table. This work deals with the synthesis, structure, spectroscopy and the directed modification of novel, mostly paramagnetic rare-earth metal complexes and their application in organometallic catalysis. In conclusion, the research within this work showed that the phosphazene based iminophosphonamide (NPN) and cyclopentadienyl-phosphazene (CpPN) ligands form stable and simultaneously highly reactive rare-earth metal complexes and enable interesting reactivity studies, the isolation of catalytically active species as well as important catalyses. Great importance was attached to the characterization of the complexes via NMR spectroscopy, including the signal assignment of the paramagnetic complexes, and X-ray structure analysis. The successful catalytic reactions were the hydroamination, the polymerization of isoprene and the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters.
