Background: To improve the care of patients with multiple trauma the DGU founded the project trauma network. In this project hospitals get certified as trauma centers accordingly to the standards of the DGU. After certification the trauma centres organize themselves in different trauma networks. The aim of the project is to assure a countrywide structured trauma care. Materials and Methods: Data about the size and structure has been gained from the homepage www.dgu-traumanetzwerk.de. This homepage provides all current data in a specially designed database. For the number of performed network meetings and further education a questionnaire was developed, which was answered by the network spokesman. Results: 29 networks, which were certified until the end of 2011, are included in these analysis. An average network consists of 13.7 clinics. There are 6.3 local TZs , 4.9 regional TZs and 2.5 supraregional TZs. The duration of the certification process averaged 40.9 months. Overall, 66.4% of all registered hospitals were certified. Networks with an high concentration of clinics show a significant higher drop-out-rate than network where are less clinics per acreage. On average, 7.4 network meetings and 7 training events took place. Conclusion: By international standards, the trauma network of the DGU is a unique project. The drop-out rate shows that not all hospitals are able to achieve the requirements of the DGU and thus a high-quality trauma care is provided. Despite the drop-outs there is a good coverage of trauma care in structurally weak regions.
