This present cross-sectional study investigates the correlation between dysfunctional cognition and depression and aims to clarify the health-relevance of negative thought processes for teachers. The main objective of the study was to determine the scope of dysfunctional negative thoughts. Factor analysis determined six dimensions of dysfunctional thinking of statistical significance: avoidance of social support, dependency, internalisation of failure, personal standards, depreciation and failure, risk avoidance. Subsequent regression analysis examined the hypothesis of the extent to which depression can be predicted by the existence of dysfunctional attitudes. The results confirm the presumption that dysfunctional thoughts help to explain the variance of depressive symptoms. Four of the six dimensions of dysfunctional attitudes - depreciation and failure, avoidance of social support, internalisation of failure and risk avoidance - were found to be significant predictors of depressive mood in teachers. The dimension personal standards and dependency in contrast did not have incremental predictive power.
