Summary: Introduction: The present article describes the development and evaluation of a questionnaire with aid of which patients can assess the quality of the perioperative phase. Using a standardized and objective methodology the aim was to design a simple patient-oriented tool for multidisciplinary application. Methods: A total of 397 patients, 64 relatives, and 123 representatives of various medical disciplines participated in the development and evaluation of the questionnaire. In seven steps involving continuing evaluation, 198 potentially relevant items were condensed to 33 questions covering the major aspects of perioperative care impacting on the patient, relatives, medical staff and nursing personnel. Results: The final version of the questionnaire containing 33 questions that can be answered on a 4-point Likert scale is presented. Initial results from 126 patients revealed good patient acceptance of this new instrument. More than 90% of the patients can complete the questionnaire within 10 minutes. Internal reliability testing revealed a Crohnbach´s alpha of 0.79. Conclusion: The present PPP33 questionnaire differs from all other instruments used to date, in particular in terms of the objectivity of its development, its patient orientation and its comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. Not only postoperative somatic disturbances are addressed, but also all relevant aspects of the entire perioperative period. Further evaluation must show whether the results obtained with this new tool correlate with other major endpoints, such as patient satisfaction.
