This retrospective study analyzed the data of 56 patients after a previous unilateral repair of a rhegmatogenous RD including the macular and a follow-up of >3 years. Each patient was treated by scleral buckling surgery. The retina reattached in all cases and after surgery there were no signs of AMD in any eye. Between july 2004 and october 2005 the patients took part in a follow-up examination. Biomicroscopy and fluorescein angiography were then performed in each of them. The intention of this study has then been to demonstrate the importance of unilateral retinal detachment on frequency and form of age-related macular degeneration in the eye after retinal detachment compared to the fellow eye.
