Neuroblastoma is the most common solid extracranial tumour in childhood. Its most important molecular prognostic marker is the amplification of MYCN. Patients with amplified MYCN gene show a significantly poorer prognosis than others. However, the reason why MYCN amplification is associated with a more aggressive phenotype is still uncertain. MYCN is shown to increase cellular proliferation as well as apoptosis. By investigating proliferation and apoptosis of primary neuroblastomas and correlating the results with MYCN amplification and clinical outcome it is hypothesized that the influence on prognosis of MYCN amplification can not be explained by its effect on proliferation neither on apoptosis.
