The background of this dissertation was the increased appearance of adopted children in a clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry in Marburg/Germany. The basis were 141 case histories of adopted children in this clinic. The object of this dissertation was to identify possible causes of this circumstance. Further we were looking for the diagnosis of the adopted patients and compared them to a population of non adopted patients. Externalizing disorders were the most common diagnosis in adopted children especially in cases of late adoption (adoption after 3rd birthday). Compared to children adopted within the first six months of live (means early adoption) the differences were not significant. Eating disorders were only present in early adopted children. Externalizing disorders were less frequent in non adopted patients. The appearance of eating disorders showed no differences between early adopted and non adopted patients. Possible reasons for the increased appearance of psychiatric disorders in adopted children could not be found because of missing information concerned to the biological parents and the time before adoption. Further studies according to this problem would be eligible.
