The subject of the study are functional buildings built as public record offices in Germany, large numbers of which have been built since the 1870s and whose appearance is closely related to the increasing socio-cultural importance of public archiving. This examination from the point of view of art history of the construction and establishment of this new undertaking in the field of construction is the first study which also takes account of functional and typological aspects, and which includes a complete inventory of all functional buildings accommodating public record offices in Germany up to 1945. The appearance and character of the architectural solutions developed outside of any national pretensions provide insights into the buildings rank in the architectural hierarchy of public buildings, as well as the changing self-concept of public record offices as an institution.
