Purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology of ear, nose and throat-diseases and to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at the Kenyatta National Hospital, a National Referral Hospital and University of Nairobi Teaching Hospital, Kenya. Upper respiratory diseases, foreign bodies, malicious tumours and HIV-infections received special attention. Over a 4-month period (June till October 2001) data of 336 patients, which were seeking medical care at the ENT-ward of the Kenyatta National Hospital, were recorded and analysed. The applicated questionnaire included 56 parameters concerning personal and socioeconomic details, diagnostically processing, diagnoses and treatment practice.
