The novel class of dilute nitride semiconductors opens up a a new field both in fundamental research and in appliaction. The metastable compound (GaIn)(NAs) is very attractive due to the large bowing of the bandgap energy as a function of nitrogen composition. Especially the appliaction for long wavelenght lasers based on GaAs has attracted increasing interest in recent years. The very detailed anaylisis of this material system has been extended to a new class of metastable compounds based on GaP substrates. In the present work fundamental aspects of III/(NV) compounds will be discussed also with respect to possible device appliactions.
