Under application of a scientific questionaire this study investigates the troubles and stress reactions on a collective of 294 volunteer firefigters. The members of the volunteer fire departments reported 10,8 potential traumatical strikes in comparison to 30 at professional firefighters. More than the half of the sample (52,6%) reported no stress symptoms and ca. a third (34,1%) reported small extents of traumatic stress symptoms. Seven percent (7,3%) fulfilled the criterias of a subsyndromal posttraumatic stress disorder and 5,2% fulfilled the criterias of a regular posttraumatic stress disorder. One aim of this study is thus that the prevalence in this sample of volunteer firefighters is not in the range of a high risk population like professional firefighters but is in the range of the general population.
