Based on the present study results, the newly developed fenestrated cement-augmentable condylar screw could be a promising option for fixation of distal femur fractures in patients with reduced bone quality, both in terms of failure load and handling or accuracy of cement application. The measured compressive forces that led to osteosynthesis failure were significantly higher in the samples with cemented condylar screws than in non-cemented samples. On the other hand, stiffness and plastic deformation showed no significant difference between the two groups. The elasticity and micro-movement required for callus formation are retained for the benefit of bone healing. This can promote early mobilization of patients and minimize secondary complications during the healing process. The cannulated screw enables improved cement application during the surgical procedure as well as repositioning as needed. Larger comparative studies are required to define clinical effectiveness more precisely. Future approaches will focus on optimized screw design to further improve implant integration.
