Topographic mappings try to project high-dimensional or complex data onto a low-dimensional output space while sufficiently preserving the topography of the data. The quality of obtained mappings depends critically on a suitable concept of neighbourhood. The Swarm-Organized Projection offers a solution to this parametrization problem by means of swarm intelligence. The practical usefulness of the proposed method was demonstrated by means of investigations in the fields of stock market analysis and molecular biology.
