Aim: The aim of this study is the retrospective analysis of root canal fillings, which were carried out in 1998 to 2001 in vivo at the Dental School, Philipps University of Marburg, Germany. This analysis contains the evaluation of the success rate for a quality assurance in dependence of selected parameters, which affect the success of root canal treatments. Methodology: 1260 root canal treatments were determined. Data were collected from the dental records and the available control radiographs. The survival probability was demonstrated as Kaplan-Meier analysis and the intergroup differences were assessed with the log-rank test. The level of significance was defined p=0,05. Results: The evaluated root canal fillings show an overall 10-year cumulative survival probability of p=0,76. The factors PRI, length and condensation are found to influence the long-term success of root canal treatments significantly. The superior achievements yielded the teeth with a healthy periapical condition, root canal fillings of the correct length and homogeneously condensed ones. The factors vitality, pain symptomatic, revision, operator, specialist and Ledermix® affect the long-term success insignificantly. Conclusion: The results for the parameters vitality, revision and operator can not be clarified with regard to the literature published so far. On the contrary, the results relative to all other examined parameter show to be in accord with a large majority of the published literature.
