Yhteenveto:All proposed hypotheses regarding the physiological function of Ucp3 are at least in part based on the transcriptional regulation of this gene. This fact illustrates how important knowledge of the regulation of a gene is to be able to infer its role. Our mutant hamster model, however, could not be fully explained by the existing model of transcriptional control and thereby challenged its integrity. During my PhD study period I addressed open questions on Ucp3 regulation employing two parallel approaches. On the one hand our mutant hamster model served as a tool to identify the unknown regulatory pathway affected by this mutation. On the other hand an unbiased analysis of the hamster Ucp3 promoter aimed at the identification and verification of so far unknown transcription factor binding sites.
