Obstructive sleep apnea is characteritzed by repetitive cessations of breathing during the night. These cessations are caused by collapsing upper airways. Although there exist several known risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) among which are obesity and male gender, the pathophysiologic effects of these factors are still unknown. This study investigates the influences of obesity on strucutral properties of the upper as well as on the compensatory reactions to upper airway obstructions. Secondly, influences of gender on these two parameters are investigated. In summary, obesity mainly effects the structural properties of the upper airways, while male gender obviously alters the compensatory reactions to upper airway obstructions, making them ineffective.
