In this study 39 patients with pHPT and 22 patients with benign thyroid disease underwent psychiatric ratings before and after parathyroid surgery. The psychiatric symptoms were evaluated using the Symptom-Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Becks Depression Inventary (BDI), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Montgomery Asberg Depression Scale (MADRS) and three measurements of cognition. The hyperparathyreoid group had preoperatively significantly higher (p<0.05) levels of psychiatric symptoms. The factors for anxiety, depression, and cognitive symptoms were the most pronounced in the pHPT patients and were also decrease after surgery.
