No matter if one watches Goodbye Deutschland (VOX), Mein neues Leben (Kabeleins), Umzug in ein neues Leben (RTL), Deutschland ade (ARD) or Tschüss Deutschland (ZDF) – when German emigrants are trying their luck abroad, they usually have neither savings nor language skills, but they certainly have a camera crew with them. TV shows about emigrating are currently experiencing a boom in German reality TV. This study analyses how the real phenomenon emigration is transferred to media reality in and by television. In the centre of this ethnographic media analysis, there is the question of media representation and its “zeitgeist”. Four exemplarily chosen docusoaps are examined concerning their genre specific and ideological methods of producing reality. Referring to John Fiske’s concept of popular culture, these reality TV formats are seen as popular “texts” that provide a potential of meanings and pleasures – multiple ways of reading – to heterogeneous audiences.
